Don't put all your eggs in one basket!

It's very tempting to dream about finding an employer out there who is going to give you all the hours you need and at the rate of pay that will solve all your financial problems. Experience, however, seems to show that this is an ideal with serious ramifications.

The one advantage (??) that part-timing has got is that part-time teachers have the potential of not being totally dependent on one employer. This means that the power of control that employers normally have is less intense with part-time teachers... but it also means that finding and keeping an income can be problematic, to say the least.

The temptation to invest as much weekly time as possible in the most beneficial contractual employer is enormous, but can be catastrophic if good circumstances change for the worse. It is, in my opinion, always a good idea on balance to work for more than one employer and to keep ones eye open for other working opportunities. If something happens to your main income, you then always have another to tide you over (and until that other work 'possibility' you have been eyeing-up comes into fruition).

Stay on the ball, keep your eye on developments and don't take anything an employer says for granted... they may not be lying, but they certainly will not be telling you everything!
